Using Maxtrax in Sand

Sand recoveries can be very difficult, especially when you have a high tide which gives you limited room to work with. Even worse, if your car is near the water edge and the tide is coming up, you want to get it out of there as fast as possible. The traditional way of recovering your four wheel drive would be with a winch or snatch strap, but now there is an alternative; Maxtrax. Snatch straps and winches require careful rigging (to rated points) and put a considerable amount of stress on both vehicles when you are pulling them out. The risk of something going wrong is much higher than using Maxtrax.

To top it off, you will get a four wheel drive unstuck on the beach with Maxtrax in about half of the time it takes to rig up a snatch strap or winch correctly. There is no risk of anything breaking, and there is much less stress on your vehicle.

Steps for recovery on the beach when using Maxtrax:
- Check your tyre pressures. If they are above 15 PSI you need to let them down!
- Identify which direction you want to drive out. Sometimes you are better off driving out in reverse than forwards, depending on the situation.
- Use the Maxtrax to dig a small amount of sand out of the way of your tyres (in the direction you are going to drive). This should create a little track for the Maxtrax to sit in.
- Place the maxtrax in the track and ensure they sit at no more than 30 degrees of angle.
- Get back into the car and place it in low range, and 2nd gear (or reverse if this is the case). Slowly take off (ensuring the wheels don't spin) and your tyres will grip onto the Maxtrax.
- Drive to firm ground and then pick the Maxtrax up.

These steps can be done incredibly quickly, and you don't risk injury or damage to people or vehicles. Whilst the explanation might seem a little too simple, it really is just like that. You will be amazed at how fast and simple it is to get a four wheel drive out of soft sand! What is even better, is that you can use these in the snow and mud, as well as when you go to launch a boat. They distribute the weight over a larger surface area ensuring that your rear wheels don't sink when you are launching or retrieving the boat!

If you want to know if these are really worth their money have a look at Maxtrax Review and for more information see Maxtrax MKII

Finding the Right Replacement Soft Top for Your Geo or Chevy Tracker

If you live anywhere in the upper Midwest, and have any kind of open top vehicle, you know that it sits parked in your garage or some storage building for 6 to 7 months of the year. What a drag it is! Many of the Trackers (as well as the Sidekicks and Samurais) only came with a "rag top", which didn't translate very well to winter driving, even though the vehicles were handy. There are some manufacturers out there that can provide you with a hard shell top for these older models, which turn them into year-round rides!

If your rag top or convertible top is worn out, torn, or leaks wind or rain, there are even more web stores out there that carry replacement soft tops. What used to be a virtual impossibility when that original top went bad, has certainly improved leaps and bounds. Especially handy are the tops for the rugged terrain and off road vehicles like our Geo Trackers. You can find them in factory replacement colors to match your vehicle, and custom colors if you like that better. The windows can be clear or tinted. There are many different fabrics available as well, and they have made them so much easier to install. So different from the old days.

With so many more tops available, it only stands to reason that the prices have begun to come down. It is now both easier to find the top to fit YOUR vehicle, and easier to find a replacement Tracker Top for less money! I've seen lots of good deals out there, which makes replacing these totally do-able! So take some time and shop around. And maybe you can get that soft top out a little more often. And look cool doing it! And maybe even have a couple dollars left in your wallet to take your sweetie for a ride!

Benefits of Different Kinds Of Jeep Tire-Racks

Jeeps are the ultimate SUVs and are the vehicles that most people prefer when going on any adventurous vacations. Its powerful engine, ground clearance and the four wheel drive allows you to drive through any terrain and even knee-deep water. Those car lovers who generally invest in a jeep need to consider a plethora of accessories and racks that can make them more prepared for any terrain and any situation.

Many of these vehicles have a tire rack on the rear as a standard model attachment but there are more styles to the tire rack than the standard stock type. You can have one that can hold multiple spare tires. This is particularly useful for those adventurers who frequently like to take the road less travelled, often the 'off-road'. In times like these there is a high chance of getting more than one flat. Having two or more spares allows you to cover a lot more distance, infinitely better than being stranded in the middle of nowhere especially if the roadside assistance cannot reach you.

The tires that are used for off-roading escapades are not the same as the street tires. The reason for this is that since they have to endure harsher conditions, off-roading tires are stronger and sturdier, often bigger too. They are Specialized and are therefore not going to fit on a standard rack. Therefore you need to have a rack meant specially for them because if you blow a tire and have to replace it, having a street tire available is of no use at all.

Also, you have racks that can be put for multiple uses part from carrying the spare tires. Cargo such as skis, surfboards and even bicycles can be attached to the racks on the outside facilitating your cargo accommodation!

A Jeep rack is the easiest and fastest way to increase storage space in your rig. It is a great option if you plan overnight trips.

Predicted SUV Reliability Ratings 2011 - CR's Top 5 and Worst 10 Small, Midsize, Luxury, Large SUVs

Consumer Reports recently released its predictions of short-term reliability for sport-utility vehicles. The predictions are based on the infrequency of serious problems within the most-recent 3 or fewer model years, depending on the availability of data. This article lists the Top 5 and Bottom 10 by CR's predicted reliability in each of the categories Small SUVs, Midsize SUVs, Luxury SUVs, and Large SUVs.

The Top 5 Small SUVs of 2011 by CR's predicted short-term reliability are:

Honda CR-V
V6 Toyota RAV4
Mitsubishi Outlander
4-cylinder Toyota RAV4
Non-turbo Subaru Forester.

The Honda CR-V and the 4-cylinder RAV4 have an excellent 2010 long-term reliability history as well. The CR-V has Consumer Reports highest reliability rating (Much Better Than Average) for 8 of the 2000 to 2009 model years and its second highest rating (Better Than Average) for the remaining two model years. The 4-cylinder RAV4 has CR's highest rating for 9 of the model years and its second highest rating for the remaining model year.

The Top 5 Midsize SUVs of 2011 are:

Toyota FJ Cruiser
4-cylinder Toyota Highlander
V6 Toyota Highlander
V6 Hyundai Santa Fe
Nissan Pathfinder.

Of these 5, the V6 Toyota Highlander has an excellent long-term reliability history. For the model years 2000 to 2009, it has CR's highest rating for 9 of the model years and its second highest rating for the remaining model year.

The Top 5 Luxury SUVs of 2011 are:

Lexus LX
Acura MDX
Lincoln Navigator
Lexus RX350
Lincoln MKT.

The Lexus RX and the Lexus LX have excellent long-term reliability ratings as well. For 2010, the RX has CR's highest reliability rating for 9 of the ten most recent model years and its second highest rating for the remaining model year. The large made-in-Japan Lexus LX has CR's highest rating for 8 of its 9-year data history and its second highest rating for the remaining year.

The Acura MDX has a less notable history, with a Much-Better-Than-Average rating for only 3 of the model years and a Better-Than-Average rating for the remaining 6 model years.

The Top 5 Large SUVs are:

Ecoboost Ford Flex
Toyota Sequoia
Front-wheel-drive Chevrolet Traverse
Chevrolet Suburban 2500
Yukon XL 2500.

The Ecoboost rating is based on only one model year of data. The Toyota Sequoia has only a mediocre long-term reliability, although it has a notable 2011 reliability rating. The 2011 rating of the Traverse, Suburban, and XL are rather mediocre. It may be best to avoid this group entirely, unless the price of a luxury sport-utility vehicle is prohibitive or vehicular dimensions force a purchase.

The Bottom 10 (11 by tie) Small SUVs by 2011 predicted short-term reliability, in ascending order (worst first), are:

Dodge Nitro
Jeep Liberty
4-cylinder, all-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute
4-cylinder, all-wheel-drive Ford Escape
V6, all-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute
V6, all-wheel-drive Ford Escape
Jeep Compass
V6, front-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute
V6, front-wheel-drive Ford Escape
4-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Mazda Tribute
4-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Ford Escape.

The Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty have fared poorly in avoiding reported serious problems. For model years 2007 and 2008 (the only two offering reliability ratings in 2010), the Nitro had one Much-Worse-Than-Average rating and one Worse-Than-Average rating. For the Jeep Liberty's four most-recent model years, two of the 2010 reliability ratings were Much Worse Than Average and two were Worse Than Average.

The Bottom 10 Midsize SUVs, with worst first, are:

Dodge Journey
4-door Jeep Wrangler
4-cylinder GMC Terrain
V6 GMC Terrain
Nissan Xtrerra
Turbo Mazda CX-7
Hyundai Veracruz
2-door Jeep Wrangler
V6 Chevrolet Equinox
V6 Kia Sorento.

Notable for poor 2010 longer-term reliability ratings are the Chevrolet Equinox and Kia Sorento. The Equinox has 3 Much-Worse-Than-Average or Worse-Than-Average ratings out of its 5-year data history and the Sorento has 4 such out of its 6-year data history.

The Bottom 10 Luxury SUVs, with worst first, are:

Turbo-diesel Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
6-cylinder BMW X5
Turbo-diesel BMW X5
V8 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Mercedes-Benz R-Class
Audi Q7
Cadillac Escalade
All-wheel-drive Buick Enclave
V6 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Lexus GX.

The V8 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class has below average reliability ratings for both model years of its 2-year 2010 data history, the 6-cylinder BMW X5 has below average ratings for 7 of its 9-year reliability history, and the all-wheel-drive Buick Enclave has one below average rating in its 2-year data history. The Lexus GX has one below average rating, but the remaining 5 ratings are above average and one is Much-Better-Than-Average. Consequently, as one descends on this list, longer-term reliability seems to improve with predicted short-term reliability.

The Bottom 10 Large SUVs, with worst first, are:

GMC Yukon Hybrid
Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
Front-wheel-drive GMC Acadia
All-wheel-drive GMC Acadia
All-wheel-drive Ford Flex
Nissan Armada
GMC Yukon
Chevrolet Tahoe
GMC Yukon XL 1500
Chevrolet Suburban 1500.

New Subaru Review - Review of 2011 Tribeca

The new Subaru 2011 Tribeca is considered to be among the well-performing and affordably priced midsize SUV models released in 2011. However, this is just not enough for making an educated decision on whether this model is suitable for you or not. Use this Subaru review to figure out whether the model is for you.

The 2011 Tribeca has a standard four-wheel drive system. It has a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine. The engine produces 256 horsepower. The five-speed automatic transmission can be shifted manually as well.

The four-wheel drive system makes this new Subaru stand out among its SUV competitors. However, this system makes the car slightly less economic. This model can achieve 16/21 mpg city/highway, according to official data. As you can see, the fuel economy is good, but it could have been better. In general, the engine has very good performance. The acceleration and transmission are considered to be the best features of this model.

The 2011 Tribeca model is equipped with all standard controls. Some of the standard features worth pointing out include power driver's seat, heated side mirrors and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. This new Subaru scores well in terms of control, but if you want more advanced high-tech features, you have to go for an upgraded base model.

This model has two rows of seats plus a standard third-row seat. The new Subaru has 8.3 cubic feet of storage space. It will not be a mistake to say that the third-row seat is a bit tight while the storage space could have been bigger, especially given the class of the vehicle. The 2011 Tribeca has a slightly conservative yet classic design. It scores better in terms of functionality than in terms of looks.

The safety features of the new Subaru include side-curtain airbags for the front and rear row seats, front-side impact airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force distribution. The car got top scores from state authorities for occupant protection. It has good scores in front crash protection, rear and side crash protection and even in roof protection. Overall, it can be said that this new Subaru model offers a good level of safety to the driver and the passengers.

Overall, this Subaru review concludes that the new 2011 Tribeca model offers good performance, convenient and reliable controls and high level of safety to the driver and passengers. The model could have been more fuel-efficient. It could have offered larger storage space.

Toyota Vios and TRD Sportivo

The new Toyota Vios has been dramatically changed and there is an option of a stylish make or a sporty type. Currently in its 3rd generation, the Toyota Vios is showing far more than ever before to be an inexpensive yet lavish and roomy vehicle.

Toyota has put sensible design to work by taking the original design of the 2007 Vios and adding sophisticated improvements to complement its contoured form. The 2010 Vios features a new grille: the bars on the grille curve softly downwards in the direction of the middle point, giving the grille a slight "V" appearance, and giving the vehicle an all round sporty look. The tail lamps for this 2010 model are also different: they curve in an outward direction and present an even more dimensional design to the rear. The electrically collapsible lateral mirrors are also an improvement on the Vios.

Toyota Malaysia has unveiled the 1.5 TRD Sportivo, 1.5G, 1.5E and 1.5J variants to this country. Toyota has added enhanced features which are unique to each variant: exquisite interior chrome trimmings and combination leather seats are specific luxurious tweaks that are offered on some of the variants. The 1.5 TRD Sportivo is the cheeky and sporty version of the lot, and comes with a leather wrap steering wheel, 15 inch, 7 spoke alloy wheels and a 5 piece Aerokit, which advances the streamlined and sporty appearance of the Toyota Vios.

The Toyota Vios has been sensibly designed so that the body-shape of the car makes parking in compact spaces extremely simple. The Vios also has a minimal turning radius of 4.9 metres, making it easy when carrying out sharp turns or u-turns.

The VVT-i engine is Toyota's hallmark technological innovation and is the key element to the Vios's outstanding performance: the engine is distinctively designed to automatically regulate valve timing in order generate ultra powerful acceleration. The VVT-i engine has also been meticulously created to reduce fuel intake and produce much cleaner emissions.

The 1.5 TRD Sportivo, 1.5G and 1.5E models are automatic transmission, whereas the 1.5J has the automatic transmission variant and the manual transmission variant. In the automatic transmission versions, the Super Electronic Controlled Transmission technology delivers smoother gear changes and is designed to select the optimum gear for a comfortable drive.

The inside of the new Toyota Vios is large, with luxurious, accommodating seats, both for the front and rear passengers in the car. There is also sufficient legroom, most notably for the rear passengers, making the Vios appropriate for easily transporting three adult passengers in the rear. The boot space is abundant and can be expanded even more, when required, by collapsing the rear seats flat.

Whether you are showing an interest in the Vios as a car for yourself or for your family, Toyota has equipped the Toyota Vios with extra safety elements, giving you ultimate reassurance. The framework of the vehicle's body has been developed and tested to distribute impact energy throughout the frame of the motor vehicle, thereby reducing impact on one region and reducing the probability of harm to the occupants of the vehicle. Another safety system is the Brake Assist technology: the vehicle intelligently picks up when the driver is executing an emergency brake and delivers additional braking force.

Noah Cover Is The Ultimate Protection For an SUV

Each and every type of car needs protection and shielding from the harsh elements of nature. Even more so a SUV. Due to the increased gas prices, many SUV are parked on the streets, waiting to be used when the prices are more reasonable. Until then, the SUVs are just there waiting to get wrecked. They are not in use, and therefore the dust and dirt just piles up, so that when the time finally comes to use the SUV, extensive repairs and cleaning needs to be done. This is a shame, and an unnecessary expense.

The ideal car cover for an SUV is the Noah cover from Covercraft. Covercraft is a company that is known for its reliability and top quality products. They have spent many years researching different fabrics and the protective components they have, and based upon this, have produced some of the best covers worldwide.

The Noah cover is one of their all-weather covers. It is composed of three layers, made from bi-component fibres. The outer layer is soft and ultra-violet resistant; it is made from polypropylene. The middle layer is made from a micro-porous film so that the cover is breathable. The inner-most layer is made from a combination of a tough nylon core and polypropylene woven together. All together, the three layers make the Noah cover durable, and totally weather-proof.

The advantage of the cover being breathable is that the car has a chance to sweat and breathe whilst covered, without the worry of it getting steamed up and mouldy. This is done by air and moist particles being allowed to escape out through the fabric, but not in. The SUV will therefore still remain completely protected from water and other unwanted liquids.

As Noah is comprised of three layers, it is able to absorb the shock of any knocks and bashes, without them making any sort of impression on the SUV itself. The cover cushions the car, and shields it from potential scratches and dents. The cover is also more durable, and unlikely to succumb to rips and tears, due to its reinforcement of three layers.

When the SUV is ready to used once more, it will be clean and still shiny, without any sorts of stains, due to the Noah cover. The cover will still be able to serve as protection, and can travel with the SUV as it is very compact. The Noah cover fold up small and neatly enough to fit in a corner of the trunk, ensuring that wherever the driver goes, it will be protected. It will resist the growth of rot and mildew, so that the cover does not even have to be completely dry when folded away.

Noah covers are custom-made so that the cover will fit the SUV precisely. This maximises the protection offered, as there is no space for anything to creep in unnoticed. It also gives the SUV a much more classy, chic look when covered, just as a SUV deserves.

Mini SUVs - Mini-Frame, MEGA-Awesome!

For those who would love to drive a bigger car without spending too much money on one, the best way to do so is to get a mini SUV. As implied by its name, these types of vehicles are just the smaller version of a regular SUV vehicle. Because it takes fewer resources to make one, it only makes sense to pay less for one. "Minis" nearly always come with the same features that the regular SUV has to offer such as spacious seats, comfortable interior and innovative design, etc. The following vehicles are the latest and greatest of the mini SUV field.

Mini Cooper Countryman

The Mini Cooper Countryman is 161.7? in length, 70.4? in width and 61.5? in height. It weighs 3858 lbs. Countryman comes with three different models including Base, S and S All4. Its price ranges from $21,650 to $26,950. It has a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine along with a 6-speed manual transmission. Countryman has a 27/35 mpg. It looks very elegant and sporty because it comes with alloy wheels, variable intermittent wipers, rear defogger and roof rack. Additionally, it has some really awesome standard interior features such as interior air filtration, air conditioning, cooled storage compartment, cargo area light, leather steering wheel and dual illuminating vanity mirrors.

Ford Escape

Another attractive mini SUV is the Ford Escape. The Escape was one of the first compact SUVs to hit the market a decade ago. The 2011 Escape is available in three trims - the base XLS, XLT, and the top-of-the-line Limited. All-wheel drive is optional. The Escape can also be purchased as a hybrid vehicle for about $9,000 more. Options available on the 2011 Escape include Ford's SYNC in-car entertainment system, active park assist (this can parallel park the car with little driver involvement) and MyKey, a programmable key which can set a speed limit on your Escape among other things.

Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler comes with eight different trims as follows: Sport, Unlimited Sport, Sahara, 70th Anniversary, Unlimited Sport RHD, Rubicon, Unlimited Sahara, Unlimited 70th Anniversary, and Unlimited Rubicon. Its price range is between $21,964 to $31,964. This 2-door SUV has a 3.8L 202 hp V6 standard engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. Note that the 4-speed automatic transmission is only available with the Unlimited Sport RHD model. Wrangler is 152.80? in length, 73.7? in width and 70.0? in height. Its weight is 3760 lbs. It has a 15/19 mpg. The standard exterior features are as follows: steel wheels, all terrain tires, variable intermittent wipers, removable soft top and rear side-hinged door. Wrangler offers great safety features like the 4-wheel ABS, child seat anchors, emergency braking assist and engine immobilizer.

Suzuki Grand Vitara

The Suzuki Vitara was last made in 2005. Ever since then, it has been replaced by Grand Vitara. Vitara is available in two body styles: 2-door or 4-door. With the 2-door version, the engine comes with a convertible soft top along with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 97 horsepower engine. The 4-door SUV comes with hard top, and its engine is a 2.0-liter version with 127 hp. Both versions come with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Their standard features include the power windows, power locks and air-conditioning. The 4-door one comes with cruise control. It weighs approximately 3307 lbs.

Making The Most Of High Performance 4x4s

Sometimes you see those guys driving beautiful, powerful, rugged performance 4x4s and never really making the most of them. They park it in the drive way, wax it twice a week and then just drive it around town. If you ask them to help you move, they tell you that they don't want to scratch the bed of their truck by actually putting something in it or dirty up their SUV by using it as intended.

If you own a 4x4, even a luxury 4x4 vehicle, then you should know that it's nuts to have one of these vehicles and not try to get the most of it. Having a high performance 4x4 that you only take around town and go grocery shopping with is like having a high def television set with surround sound that you only watch Nick at Nite reruns on.

Here are a few ways to get your money's worth out of your performance 4x4...

Get a Bed Liner/Trailer

If you're driving an SUV, get a trailer for hauling. If you're getting a truck, you might want to look into getting a bed liner, or just carry those scratches as proud battle scars. The bottom line is that you should always be moving stuff around with your 4x4 or why buy a 4x4 in the first place? If you don't want to use a 4x4 for hauling, even one of the wide range of modern luxury 4x4 vehicles, you may as well just get a compact car.

Get it Dirty

Take it out in the woods, take it mudding, take it somewhere where you're going to actually need all that muscle it's packing under the hood. A heavy duty 4x4 is at its best when climbing uphill on some muddy field after a week long hunting trip. Bottom line: it's a man's vehicle, so drive it like a man.

Work Construction

Even if you've got a successful career going already, do some construction work, or at least help out a couple of your buddies with their projects. If you really want to put your wheels to the test, build a cabin. You can find a cheap piece of land and build with the trees already on the property, and going in on a project like that with a few buddies is a heck of a great way to get out of the house, put your 4x4 to the test and have something to show for it when all's said and done.

Hunt, Fish and Camp Out

...As often as possible. Any time you get an opportunity, take that 4 x 4 outdoors and get it muddy, get your hands dirty and enjoy all that the outdoors have to offer.

Of course, the reality here is that, if you own a 4x4 and you like to do more with it than make your driveway look really pretty, then we don't really need to give you an excuse to throw stuff in the back of your truck or in your trailer and go cruising across fields of mud and dirt. Get out there and enjoy your 4x4.

Hugh McInnes loves luxury SUV and is always on the news about launchings and prices of all that is new in the new 4x4 world.

Maxtrax Review

If you have done much four wheel driving before, there is a good chance you will have heard of Maxtrax. If you haven't ever heard of them, then you need to read on! Maxtrax are a unique recovery device made out of engineer's grade nylon. In essence, they are tracks which you push under your tyres when you get stuck. You simply drive onto them and you are out of trouble in no time at all. They are by far the fastest way to get out of a difficult situation, and they require very little effort. Rather than having to get out and rig up a winch and snatch strap (which are also more dangerous) you are able to get out on your own.

If you are four wheel driving on your own, which many people do when they are touring these are the perfect piece of four wheel drive recovery equipment. Maxtrax are light weight, and can also be used as a shovel. The great thing about Maxtrax is that you can use them in a variety of situations. If you are stuck on the beach or in the sand dunes, these work brilliantly. They also work well in the soft mud that four wheel drivers love to play in, and the snow as well. In fact, have a look at some of the photos of Maxtrax; they are used throughout the world in many different situations and terrains. Even in four wheel drive competitions you will see these being used; the proof is in the pudding.

Maxtrax come with pins, meaning you can bolt them down onto your roof racks with ease. You can also buy bags to carry them, so storage is no longer a problem. Recently they have begun to sell straps in which you can join several of the Maxtrax together. This means if you get to a particularly difficult section you can lie several out in a row and drive through it without any problems. It also helps to keep the tracks in a good condition. Nothing is worse than driving along a track that has been ripped up by the previous vehicle!

Maxtrax are sold throughout the world, and my personal review gives them top marks. They are truly the best money I have spent on four wheel drive recovery equipment, and they get used regularly. You can purchase these throughout the world too.

If you want to find out more about these great tools have a read of the Maxtrax Review and for general information, photos and videos have a look at Maxtrax

Maxxis Bighorns

Maxxis Bighorns are a mud terrain tyre that has been on the market now for several years. The previous Mud Terrain tyres by Maxxis were known as Maxxis buckshot's. Maxxis have already proved that their tyres are brilliant on quads and racing cars, meaning there is no reason not to expect a great 4x4 Tyre for driving a 4x4 in the mud! I purchased 5 Maxxis bighorns on My Hilux about a year ago now, and I have been using them both on road and off-road on the beach, dunes, rocks and mud.

What pressure should I run my Bighorns at?
This should be largely decided by the weight of your car, and the terrain that you are driving on. For on road use, the Maxxis Bighorns have a maximum rating of 35 PSI. Generally, the bigger the tyre that you have on your car the less pressure that you need in them on the road. Of course, you ought to check and test with what works best. I run my Maxxis at 30 PSI on the road (being a light Hilux and they wear well at 30). On the beach I will usually drop them down to 15 PSI, but I won't hesitate to let them down to 10 if I am struggling in soft sand. If I am just driving on rocks or through mud I usually just let them down to around 18 PSI. Of course, if your car is heavier you might need to keep them pumped up more, but just do some research and testing to see what works. For Beach Driving, in between 15 and 18 PSI is generally the right pressure on larger four wheel drives.

The biggest mistake I see people doing is not letting their tyres down when they are off-road. This is especially important when you are driving on sand, as it increases your footprint dramatically, and makes your car float on top of the sand rather than digging down. If you have tyres pumped up tight, then they tend to sink down and dig holes. When driving through bushland, it's much easier to get a puncture in your tyre if you are running them at a high pressure. You can take a normal balloon that is not pumped up much and push it onto a sharp rock (carefully) and it will not burst. Get the same balloon and pump it up tight, and it will pop the second you touch it on the rock. It's really the same principle with tyres, and letting them down to the correct pressure will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Are Maxxis Bighorns any good in sand?
Some people find mud tyres work better than standard tyres on sand, and others find the opposite. The fact is with Maxxis Bighorns, you shouldn't struggle on the beach. My set is 12.5 inches wide, which gives them a slightly bigger footprint anyway. The trick with these tyres is to let them down enough so that they work effectively. If that means letting them right down to 15 pound, then so be it. I find that they love to dig holes (because of the aggressive tread)  but they tend to pull through soft sand. Just make sure they are let down to a safe level which doesn't overwork your car.

You can get bead locks, which will prevent this, but they are an extra expense and may not be legal where you live to drive on the road. If you are a big sand driver, then perhaps purchasing a set of all terrains would be a better idea. However, in terms of compromise between a tyre which is exceptionally good in the mud and on rocks, the Maxxis Bighorns do very well.

What pressure can I drop them down to if I need to?
I haven't needed to drop my tyres down to anything below 10 PSI. If you really needed to though, you could probably safely drop them down to 5 PSI for getting out of a sticky situation. It's not advisable to drive like this for long without bead locks; make sure you pump the tyres up a bit once you are out of trouble. Always remember if you are really in trouble, a set of tyres is probably worth less than the value of your car. If the tide is coming up, then wrecking a set of tyres will usually be worth it to get out of trouble! I always advise having a set of Max Tracks or some shade cloth with you to help get out in soft sand anyway. Make sure you have a good Car Air Compressor for when you are done four wheel driving.

Do they wear well?
I have heard a number of people mention that their Maxxis Bighorns did around the 80,000km mark. I have done just over 17,000 on my Maxxis Bighorns, and they have worn very little. Brand new, they come with 14.5mm of tread, and mine still have around 12mm left. My set look to do evne more than 80,000km which is great! Of course, if you drive purely off-road then they will obviously wear quicker. It also depends on how you drive. If you like spinning your wheels on rocks and taking off quickly from the lights then they will not last as long either.

Something I highly advise is proper tyre rotation. When you spend over a thousand dollars on rubber, you want to make sure that they are going to last as long as possible. I even include my spare tyre in the rotation, because otherwise you end up with a brand new tyre in a few years time that has hard rubber and a tyre that isn't reliable anyway. You may as well use it, and include it in the rotation. The more regularly you rotate the tyres the longer they last, but 5,000 to 10,000 intervals will do just fine.

Tyre Rotation:
I normally rotate the front right to the back right. The back right goes to the spare. The spare goes to the front left, and the front left goes to the back left. The back left goes to the front right, and after 5 rotations you are back at the start. Different people will have different opinions on the best way to do it, so be sure to do your research. Overall, just make sure that the tyres are not staying in the same place for too long, because they will wear out much quicker if they do.

How strong are Maxxis Bighorns?
In terms of the sidewall rating, they are not as strong as some of the tyres that you can purchase today. I would suggest that if you are going to do a trip across Australia, maybe look for some other tyres than the Maxxis Bighorns (depending on where you are going). In saying this, they are not weak tyres. I have only damaged one, when a rock dented in my rim and pinched the tyre a little. It put two cuts through the rubber, but it doesn't leak. The side grabbers work very well, especially on slippery clay or rocks.

Maxxis Bighorn Price
Maxxis Bighorns are very cheap compared to other brands. They are not the cheapest mud terrain tyre, but they are definitely in the lower part of prices. The more expensive tyres include BFG Goodrich muddies, Goodyear Wranglers and Cooper STT's. Whilst these may be good tyres, they are considerably more expensive. I purchased my 5 Maxxis (33 x 12.5inch tyres) for the same as a friend purchased smaller Cooper STT muddies. It's a fairly big saving point, but entirely up to what you need the rubber to do.

Maxxis Bighorn Comparison
Earlier this year, the 4x4 Action team in Australia did a comparison of mud terrain tyres. The only thing that they really missed out on was wear after several thousand kilometres, but none of the tyres that they tested were damaged. The number one winner was the new BFG Goodrich muddy, and second place was the Maxxis Bighorn. This was taking into consideration a huge number of factors such as braking ability, on road handling, noise, sand, mud and rock driving as well as a few other bits and pieces. They really do perform very well.

Where is the best place to get them from?
This depends largely on where you live, but you can visit Bob Jane, Ian Diffen and various other places. I believe Tyre Power and those that don't normally stock Maxxis are able to order them in, but they are usually more expensive. Just shop around and find the best price, then take it to someone you know and see if they will beat it. I paid just under $300 each for my 33 x 12.5 Maxxis Bighorns, but you should be able to get them for a bit less if you look around. The cheapest place for these great tyres is eBay.

Are Maxxis Bighorns any good?
My overall opinion of these tyres is that they are huge value for money. When you consider the big price difference, and the wear that you get out of them, they are great. I love the fact that they are great in mud, they look good and they don't break the wallet to get a set. In fact, I paid the same amount for my tyres as my dad did for a set of normal highway tyres for his Pajero, and they will do more kilometres than his! In terms of a comparison between other 4x4 Accessories that I have fitted and these tyres, I made a good decision in getting the Maxxis. In fact, if you look around for reviews on the four wheel drive forums for Maxxis Bighorns, almost everyone says that they are great value. My next set of tyres will definitely be a set of Maxxis Bighorns.

What Is Four Wheel Driving?

I got into 4x4 several years ago, and currently own a 1997 Toyota Hilux. 4x4 is done in cars that are designed to drive on surfaces that are rocky, wet, soft, bumpy or unforgiving. Normal cars are only two wheel drive, whereas a 4wd car is four wheel drive (hence the 4x4 or 4wd), which gives it more traction to drive on difficult terrain. They also have more clearance, more storage and the ability to tow a caravan, boat or Camper Trailer with ease. Four wheel driving is a huge sport throughout the world, and is also popular amongst those touring countries or simply going away for the weekend. Owning a four wheel drive means that you can drive onto a beach, climb up a steep rutted hill and even take your family away to somewhere remote for the weekend!

Types of 4wds
There are a huge range of four wheel drives that are available, starting from the more common brand names; Toyota, Nissan, Jeep, Range Rover, Land Rover, Suzuki, Ford, Holden and even Mercedes. Each brand of cars have a different way of building their cars, which explains why each have different strengths and weaknesses. Today, 4wd's are becoming much more safety conscious which means that they are often not as good off-road as some of the older four wheel drives in standard condition. Also, with more electronics and other tricky gadgets, they tend to not be as strong and reliable off-road (more things to go wrong). In saying this, you can modify a brand new vehicle today with the right parts to make it extremely capable and reliable.

Where can I drive?
This question can be answered largely by where you live and what restrictions the law imposes. In Australia, you can drive on a huge number of beaches, sand dunes (like Lancelin) and tracks that go through the bush. Of course there are areas where you are not allowed to drive, but you just do some research and work out a way around them! Be aware that some tracks will be considerably harder than others, and if you take a track that's too hard for your vehicle you can do some very costly damage to the car or even people. A good four wheel drive can drive on sand, mud, rocks, snow and combinations of them. Being able to take tracks that a normal car couldn't tackle opens up a whole range of new options; fishing on the beach, Camping and touring a country.

How to drive (and how not to)
Like other sports, 4x4 is something that you can only learn by doing or watching. Unlike other sports, if you make mistakes they can be very costly, so it's important to take things slow and learn at a rate that you are comfortable with. Different terrains require a different style of driving, which you learn over time.  The best advice I can give is to only take routes that you are comfortable with. There are a number of four wheel driving courses that you can do if you want, and these will provide a good understanding of what you should be doing. There is a fair bit of skill in driving off-road, which is learned over time. There is also a fair bit to know in vehicle recoveries, where to drive and what to avoid. I will go into more specifics in future posts.

What 4x4 suits you best?
Purchasing a four wheel drive car can be quite a large decision, which is why it's a smart move to do some serious research first. The 4wd that suits you best is determined by what you want it to do. A resource which I would highly recommend is the 4wd monthly forum. This will give you a great guide from the basics right through to full on professional modifications, ways to drive and more. The general theory behind buying the right four wheel drive is to make a list of what you want it to be able to do, and then find a vehicle which comfortably will do those things time and time again.

I purchased my 1997 Toyota Hilux almost a year ago now, for a number of reasons. I've listed the requirements of my car below, and the Hilux has fulfilled every single one of these:
•    Must be robust, capable off-road and easy to modify, without breaking the wallet
•    Must look good
•    Must be reliable and cheap to fix if anything goes wrong
•    Must be economical (I have converted it to gas, which means an already cheap to run vehicle is now cheaper than most smaller cars on petrol)
•    Must be able to be cleaned easily (vinyl floors and seats are awesome)
•    Must be able to throw gear in for work (timber, tools and anything else)

I have to say that I have not been let down at all, but I carefully planned what I wanted in my 4x4 and then made my choice. Maybe you want a car that is average off-road but will tour Australia with ease whilst carrying the families gear? Maybe you need the towing capacity for the big boat or a car that is basically indestructible? Of course it's unlikely you will find the perfect vehicle, but with thought and the right modifications you can come up with a car that will do almost everything that you want it to. The only tiny issue I have with the Hilux is that it isn't very powerful (but that's the compromise for good fuel economy). This makes it difficult to tow a trailer or boat and to drive long distances on the road. In saying this, I am more than happy with the car!

Modifications
When you purchase a four wheel drive brand new from the factory they are usually pretty poor in most severe off road situations. They have cheap road tyres that offer poor traction, very little clearance, little bar work, engines that aren't as powerful as they could be and overall lacking many 4x4 Accessories that are necessary. You can change the suspension, lift the body, put sidesteps, bull bars and rear bars on, add spot lights and a roof rack, tyre carriers on the back of the car, convert the engine to run on two fuels, put larger tyres and different rims, change the exhaust and heaps more. Because four wheel driving is so popular there are a huge number of modifications that you can do to your car, regardless of the brand. The most important thing to remember is to modify within what's legal in your area and to do it to suit what you want from your car!

This blog covers a wide variety of topics, but I plan on going through various techniques to drive on different terrains, tips and basic guidelines, ways to modify your car and what works and places that you can take your car for a day or even for a week! I hope you enjoy. Some 4x4 posts I have already covered are Lancelin, Wedge Island, Honeymoon Pool and Dunsborough.

I have also written a post on 4x4 Accessories and 4x4 Tyres for your information! Please have a look.

The Perfect 18th Birthday Present - Classes At A Driving School

At 18, there are a lot of things a young adult wants; in case of boys, it maybe the latest gadget or gizmo, PC games and sports apparatus. For girls it might be a great dress or a lovely pair of shoes. However if you really want to gift them a skill that will serve them well for the rest of their lives, enroll you child in a great quality driving school. If you still have any doubts about why that is so, then read this article till the end.

The fact that you child will own a car less than 10 years from now is a near certainty. Add to this the fact that many drivers who do not take proper driving lessons end up in accidents at some point in their lives. This means that if you truly care for your child's well-being then it is a wise decision to invest in a good driving class right now.

Once your child learns to drive at a good reputed driving school, he will be grateful every time he makes a right call on the road. The best part about this entire thing is that you re-enforce your faith in your child's abilities and at the same time show them how much you care about them and their future ambitions. One thing that you must ensure while choosing a good driving school for your child is that it must cover all the crucial aspects that an amateur driver needs to learn. Since regular practice is the best way to drive well, you must encourage your child to try out at home, what he learnt in class that day.

Even if it means a few minor mistakes, it's ok. Don't be harsh or de-motivating. At such times it helps to try and remember how many times you faltered when you were learning to drive for the first time. Check on him at the driving school and make sure that the theory lessons are practical and up to date. Talk to him/her about the importance of driving safely. Make sure that the driving school gives enough exposure towards driving in congested traffic conditions as well as long free-ways and highways.

Go with your child occasionally and show faith in him by offering to get dropped by him once in a while. This will not only motivate, but will provide the right impetus for him to step into the world of safe and responsible driving.

Like most growing sectors, the automotive sector has also seen a steady growth, sprinkled with some sporadic rapid rises since the last century. In fact car companies have gone out of the way in promoting their products so much that they provided financial solutions (pre arranged car loans form banks) and exciting customer offers like free enrollment in driving classes for one member in their local area.

The art of driving is best to be learnt at a school under experienced and thorough professionals. There are many aspects of driving a car that can be significantly different from driving a bike. Right form the horse power, controls, to the lanes, roads, etc differ for cars from bikes. Hence a thorough initial understanding is required when shifting from one driving mode to another. Whether you are a newbie car driver or coming back to driving a car after a long time, it is best to go through a methodical and professional ramp up session by joining a driving school.

The 2011 Chevy Suburban: A Large And Powerful SUV

The 2011 Chevy Suburban is one of the most known and established SUV's on the market. Most would expect such a large and heavy vehicle to run a bit sluggish or be slow when it comes to acceleration but the Suburban isn't! It's quite fast and nimble for such a big ride with enough room to seat eight to nine people, so it's perfect for large families who plan to tow heavy objects on a regular basis. Some buyers might be turned off by the fact that this vehicle doesn't have the best gas mileage; however that is to be expected by a vehicle of this size with heavy towing capabilities.

Let's take a look at all the features that are available according to trim. There are three trim levels to choose from. All models come standard with slick 17" wheels, front seats that are power adjustable for ultimate comfort, a dual climate control system and a Bluetooth system that allows you to place and receive phone calls without taking your hands off the steering wheel. The mid-level LT trim comes with seats appointed in leather and a state-of-the-art sound system. The interior on all trims is upscale; high quality materials have been used throughout the cabin.

Buyers get to choose from the type of engines they want; there is a super powerful 8 cylinder and a less sedate 6 cylinder engine. The V6 is equipped with 352 horsepower and 382 lb feet of torque while the V8 6.0 Liter outputs 320 hp and 382 lb feet of torque. As mentioned earlier, gas mileage isn't the Suburban's strong point. It receives 10 miles per gallon in the city and 16 miles per gallon on the freeway. The upscale LTZ trim is equipped with heated seats and a rearview camera. Another available option is the liftgate which comes in quite handy when you need to load and unload heavy items.

Plenty of safety features have been included such as passenger and driver air bags, On Star Automatic Crash Response, rear parking assist and remote vehicle standard. A traction control system is in place to help keep the vehicle stable. Cargo space is impressive; a total of 45.8 cubic feet of cargo space is available which can be expanded to 137.4 cubic feet with the third row of seats removed and the second row folded down.

The Chevy Suburban is perfect if you drive a lot of people around on a regular basis and need the ability to tow. If you don't plan on towing and just need a large SUV that can transport a large number of people there are other large vehicles on the market with better mileage. Pricing starts at $41,335 for the base model.

Making Four Wheel Drive Recoveries Simple

There is no doubt that trying to recover a four wheel drive can be a stressful experience. In many cases, recoveries are rushed and things are done that are unsafe and likely to cause damage either to a vehicle or to those standing around watching. The most important factor involved with recoveries is time, and unless you seriously need to get the car out in a rush, take your time and come up with a quality plan. This will ensure that you get your vehicle out with minimal stress, damage and that everyone goes home happy at the end of the day!

A lot of people forget that the best way to take stress off your vehicle is simply to make it easier to drive out. Whether that means adjusting a few rocks so you can drive up them with greater ease, or digging for 5 minutes to remove some of the sand, mud or snow in the way of your four wheel drive. Combine this with the right tyre pressures, and its not unlikely that you will be able to drive out without any assistance. Tyre pressures are the most important factor when four wheel driving. If they are too high you risk punctures and getting bogged, but if they are too low you risk rolling a tyre off the bead.

However, in most four wheel drive recovery situations you can afford to drop the tyre pressures down even more. Unless your vehicle weighs more than 3 tonnes, you can comfortably go down to about 12 PSI and you will be amazed at how easy it is to get out. In most situations if you do a little bit of digging and you drop your tyre pressures down you will idle out without any further thought! If you can't do this though, have a think about what your next option is. Winches are great for controlled recoveries, but if you don't have access to one then a snatch strap works just as well.

My number one recommendation is Maxtrax. They are a unique recovery device made of engineering grade nylon, which you simply push under the wheels of your four wheel drive. You can even use them as a shovel. From there, you simply get in the car, and drive onto the Maxtrax (without spinning the wheels). They really are the best four wheel drive recovery accessory on the market, and you can buy them worldwide.

Recoveries need to be done in a manner that is safe, as the number one priority. If you are towing a vehicle out, everyone needs to be at least 20 metres away. Dampeners should be used, and above all - take your time with the recovery and think about it as much as you can. You will be amazed at the different ways there are to recover a four wheel drive, without much work at all.

For more information on Maxtrax, have a look at my Maxtrax Review. If you want to know what else to pack into your four wheel drive, have a look at the 4wd Recovery Kit.

Volkswagen Enters Van Market With a Bang!

Volkswagen have always had a knack for making good vans. We all have a soft spot for their retro hippie camper vans and the reminiscing memories and endearing charm they give off. With such past success behind them in the van category, it is surprising that until now VW have steered clear of the commercial SUV class. It was only a matter of time before they ventured in and here is the result, the rather meaty looking VW Amarok. Going toe-to-toe with the Navara's and Hilux's, it already has its work cut out to put a stamp on the category. While it is by no means groundbreaking, it delivers the goods in a way that firmly establishes it as a competitor with the best in the category.

Aesthetically it holds back on the ostentatious and instead delivers a design that is functional and practical, much like its competitors. Rather than start from new, it appears to be a patch quilt of all sorts of designs seemingly knitted together; with the front and back both looking like they come from existing vehicles that are already commercially available. At the front there is the trademark VW grille and lights, which keeping faithful to the brand looks like they've come straight from the Golf series. The sides look muscular and very much reminiscent of one of the American pickups and the rear closely resembles that of a Nissan Navara, right down to the arrangement of the lights. It's all very much cut and paste, yet regardless of this knitting process there is no denying that all these pieces fit together pretty comfortably - this van is by no means ugly.

Interior is outstanding with a massive emphasis on quality - everything feels much more expensive than the price tag. High quality plastics and leather make up the majority of the inside, with the odd piece of stainless steel trim thrown in for good measure. The interior style is very much a minimalist affair, but by no means does it look sparse. The centre console is suitably well equipped and there's plenty of buttons to play around with. The various trim levels are divided into three categories: Startline being the entry level, Trendline being mid range and Highline topping them off. As standard on all levels you get what you would expect; air conditioning, 2 speaker CD radio system, electric front and rear windows and a 3 seat folding rear bench in the back.

Moving onto the engine, it's probably the main selling point of the van, as it has some class leading features that are sure to impress. With the choice of either a 2.0-litre BiTDI 163bhp engine or a 2.0-litre TDI 122bhp, both engines give the suitable grunt that pickups need. On a van torque is important and they thankfully carry a solid amount of torque for a vehicle of this size, with 295lb ft available from 1500rpm.The clincher is in the emission and fuel consumption figures, of which the Amarok manages to come out top of its class at 37.2mpg and 206g/km of Co2 for the BTDI and 35.8 and 199g/km of Co2 for the TDI. Volkswagen are claiming this is the first pickup to ever manage an emission output less than 200g/km, which is undoubtedly a mightily impressive point.

The new Volkswagen Amarok is going on sale in the UK on May 1st which means it will be available by the time you're reading this. It's a great little mover and manages to compete well with the best in the category. While it doesn't bring anything fresh, its small frame and fantastic fuel economy and emission ratings make this a great buy for anyone who doesn't fancy a typical gas guzzling SUV.
